Met haar debuutcd Song (S 62602) wist de Zuid-Afrikaanse, in Belgi� residerende, jonge zangeres Tutu Puoane al menig jazzliefhebber inclusief de jazzpers voor zich te winnen. Ze zat qua vocale en compositorische mogelijkheden nog lang niet aan haar top, hetgeen bewezen wordt met de opvolger Quiet Now. Nummers als Mangakane, dat Tutu samen met haar partner en begeleider Ewout Pierreux schreef, en Hlompha Bophelo laten horen hoe zij op meesterlijke wijze haar Zuid-Afrikaanse roots verweeft met spannende jazzcomposities. Ook de prachtige vertolking van I Dont Know Where I Stand (Joni Mitchell) dwingt groot respect af. De begeleiding bestaat uit de getalenteerde pianist Ewout Pierreux, de veelgevraagde bassist Nicolas Thys en drummer Lieven Venken.

Whilst her first album mainly contained covers, is her new album Quiet Now much more personal. It holds more original repertoire. Most of the songs were written by her partner and pianist Ewout Pierreux and bass player Nicolas Thys, with lyrics both in English and Sepedi (Tutu’s mother tongue). Additionally the quartet recorded three covers by McCoy Tyner, Mark Fransman (great South African pianist and saxophone player) and Joni Mitchell.
Quiet Now turned out to be a beautiful and very personal statement and the quartet cannot wait to introduce it to the world.
