Cornbread Records present a reissue of Yusef Lateef's The Centaur And The Phoenix, originally released in 1960. Recorded in 2 days in October of that year, The Centaur And The Phoenix is one of reeds player Lateef's most innovative early albums. Featuring modal and hard bop material, arrangements from a young Kenny Barron, and accompaniment from Curtis Fuller, Clark Terry, Joe Zawinul, and more, the album marks a bit of a turning point for Lateef as he expanded his sound, vision, and composing talents. With songs and arrangements clearly influenced by Charles Mingus' contemporaneous work, The Centaur And The Phoenix is a near-perfect album from one of the most innovative jazz players of the mid-20th century. 180 gram vinyl.
