Vicky Leandros

The winner of the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest, where she became the latest in a long line of foreign vocalists to represent the tiny principality of Luxembourg, Vicky Leandros was born in Palaiokastritsa, on the Greek island of Corfu, on August 23, 1952, the daughter of composer Leandros Papathanasiou. Her birth name was Vassiliki Papathanasiou, which became Vicky Leandros. Her albums were initially released under her name - Vicky, singles were recorded in up to eight different languages in order to maximize their exposure across Europe, a ploy that saw Leandros become one of the first truly pan-European superstars. She became also extremely successful in Japan, Canada, Asia and South Africa. Leandros has received various awards including gold and platinum records from all around the world for discs that have sold in excess of 150 million copies. She worked with many composers, producers and conductors. She was awarded with the "Bronze Rose of Montreux", "Goldene Europa", "Record Award of USA", and "Song Statue of Japan".Leandros has remained a major force throughout the 10s; she still records (mainly in german) and touring all over Europe.
