Founded in 1956 by Dirk Slinger, operated by his sons Casper and Will Slinger, Artone was located from 1957 on in the former Hotel Funckler at Kruisstraat 8-10 in Haarlem, hence the sublabel's name. The company managed to secure many distribution deals with American labels of which one was CBS since 1961 which became the most selling label for Artone in The Netherlands. In 1966 CBS had 50% ownership of Artone and after three more years it owned the company fully, including pressing and printing plant, and was renamed CBS Artone N.V. (later CBS Grammofoonplaten B.V.) . The label Artone kept exisiting for a couple of years until it vanished mid seventies, coming back shortly in the eighties as a label for predominantly Dutch repertoire.
After CBS was taken over by Sony Music in 1990 the company was renamed Sony Music Entertainment (Holland) B.V. . Sony sold the pressing plant in Haarlem to Record Industry in 1998.

Artone also had an office in Brussels, Belgium.
