The Teldec label was founded in 1980 by the TELDEC »Telefunken-Decca« Schallplatten GmbH and became a major German player in the 80s. The label is now owned by Warner Music Group Germany Holding GmbH.
The TELDEC brand is actually older and was coined in 1950, after AEG's Telefunken record branch and Decca's German department merged to TELDEC »Telefunken-Decca« Schallplatten GmbH. In Germany, the company mostly used its full name for commercial releases: till 1970 there are only few examples where just the term Teldec can be found on labels and sleeves. But licensing companys abroad (for example Sweden's Grammofon AB Electra) often shortened the long company's name to simply Teldec. According to the discogs guidelines it is ok to link to the Teldec label in these cases, even if Teldec obviously refers to TELDEC »Telefunken-Decca« Schallplatten GmbH and its studios, mastering or pressing facilities. Please always check twice before you use this link for records released before 1980 and make sure you use the correct link for the company tasks.
1983-1988: The company behind the label changed the name to TELDEC Schallplatten GmbH.
In 1988, the TELDEC label was acquired by the Warner Music Group. The company's name changed to TELDEC Record Service GmbH. The pop side of TELDEC was split from the classical side and found a home at EastWest Records GmbH. The classical side was renamed to TELDEC Classics.
