Vortice, in Italian, is a whirlpool, what we call a vortex. But this is not programme music: the inspiration, the musical density, the quality of writing, interpretation and improvisation, ensure the autonomy that presides over Great Art. It all begins, in a melancholy mode, with an evocation of the early hours of the morning on the merry-go-rounds. The finesse of the writing and the harmonisation never restrict the freedom of the performers. Angular transitions, from melancholy pianism to a kind of allegro barbaro, meticulous arrangements carried away by a kind of elan vital: this is very collective music celebrated by great soloists.
